Courthouse construction on schedule for April opening

The new Cape Girardeau County Courthouse being constructed in Jackson is on schedule for an April 1 opening, with furniture being installed in the first of six courtrooms.

“We have the first set of courtroom furniture in to [figure out] the trials and tribulations of measuring and getting it all in,” County Commissioner Charlie Herbst said.

Herbst said they have worked with Missouri Vocational Enterprises (MVE), which made the furniture, to double check the plans and schedule deliveries.

The county will receive another load of furniture this week. “We are trying to schedule it where every couple of weeks, MVE gets stuff built and then ships it to us,” Herbst said.

Carpet has been installed on the third floor, which houses two courtrooms, judges’ chambers and drug court.

The 82,000-square-foot building will cost approximately $18 million.
